A domain name is your businesses web name equivilent. For example ours is www.thelittlewebcompany.com.au. It is used to locate your site in a browser and/or to make up part of your email address. ie yourname@yourdomain.com.au

Registering a .com.au shows that your business is Australian and will help people find you in the Australian version of search engines, like google.com.au and yahoo.com.au

There are some rules you need to follow when applying for a domain name. The domain name must be closely releated to the business name. For example if your Business name is Bob's Spare Parts for Cars, you couldn't register holden.com.au, but you could try for bobsparts.com.au or bobsspares.com.au or bobscarparts.com.au. Businesses do not own domain names, they licence them for a period of time and must renew that licence at regular intervals. All .au domains have a 2yr licence where as .com domains are licenced on a yearly basis.
